Three extraordinary guitarists in one show. Visiting from Japan, one of Japan’s leading acoustic folk and jazz guitarists, Chuei Yoshikawa (吉川 忠英) will be performing at Mark St Hall with Australian guitarists Nick Charles and Leigh Sloggett.
In 2020 we were anticipating Chuei Yoshikawa’s visit from Japan; that became impossible with the lockdowns and border closures caused by Covid 19. And now here we are!
CHUEI YOSHIKAWA
Chuei Yoshikawa has numerous albums to his name and every year tours Japan performing solo concerts from Hokkaido to Okinawa. As one of Japan’s leading acoustic guitarists, studio musician, arranger and producer, he has participated in numerous recordings and concerts with many of Japan’s most acclaimed artists including Miyuki Nakajima, Yumi Matsutoya, Masaharu Fukuyama, Rimi Natsukawa, Yuzo Kayama, and Chage. He has been highly praised for producing acoustic albums
such as ‘Golden Oldies’ by Masaharu Fukuyama, ‘Southerly Wind’; by Rimi Natsukawa, and ‘Osami Okamoto Acoustic Party with Chuei Yoshikawa’. Chuei was a member of the legendary folk group ‘The New Frontiers’ in the 1970’s. Later know as ‘East’, they gained attention as a folk-rock group incorporating traditional Japanese musical instruments. Martin, Yamaha, Sumi, Jack Spira and Tears guitar companies all have ‘Chuei’ signature model guitars. Chuie has his own Online Guitar School and also performs rakugo (Japanese comedic story telling) as ‘Akogi-tei Chusuke’.

Performing on average 150 shows a year across the world, Nick Charles is known internationally as “Australia’s virtuoso of acoustic roots and blues”. His 35+ year career has seen him accumulate every conceivable accolade including Port Fairy Artist of the Year 2014 (Australia’s highest folk accolade) and he’s a twice winner of the Australian Song Contest. He’s toured with artists including John Hammond, Guy Clarke, Ralph McTell, Robyn Ford and BB King touring the US 13 times in recent years and released 20 albums worldwide. A laid-back yet intense musical force is born when authenticity meets refined talent. Leigh’s earthy song-writing and commanding style extend beyond the diverse foundations of Blues and Folk. Leigh released his fourth album ‘Wait for the Change’ in October 2022 which went on to reach number ten on the Australian Blues and Roots charts. His third album ‘More Than I Need’ released in 2012 reach number eight. He has toured internationally and has performed consistently over two decades building a reputation as a unique song writing and guitarist.
